My mom often talks about people as “Good starters” or “Good finishers” of things. For example, my hubby is a great finisher. As summer started winding down about two weeks ago we decided the trampoline in our backyard needed to be removed as it showed signs of falling apart (Eek!). Once removed it was clear the yard in general needed some love. He divided the yard into sections and little by little he’s improving each section. As I type he is working through the third section of the yard and this weekend will tackle the fourth! I would have taken months just to think about the sections of the yard. Amazing quality he naturally has to dive in an see something through to the end. I have no doubt the yard will look amazing.
Me on the other hand… In work I am a great executer and love seeing things from start to finish. Sometimes priorities change preventing a true finish but by and large I see things through. Personal goals, not so much. My mom would likely identify me as a great starter. Who am I kidding, I self-identify as a great starter which is a nice way of saying lousy finisher. Perhaps most people are? Some examples I’m guilty of are joining a gym and going three days in a row only to stop and never return. Start a diet and lose 2 lbs only to slip on the weekend and gain it back. Go to organize my dresser drawers and only sort one drawer, the bag of clothes to donate sits in the garage for a month before maybe moving to the car to sit another month or two before finally making it to donation. Enter hubby to finally drop it off. Sigh.
I’ll be lucky if I actually finish this post! 😉 So in my soul searching over the last year which fortunately for me has included personal therapy and executive career coaching I learned this about myself. Self awareness is huge for me so am excited by this challenge to improve.
I decided to set small goals with clear beginning, middle, and end to make measurable progress and most importantly experience the feeling of accomplishment. I believe it will cause a positive feedback loop. I watch videos all the time of people making yummy looking recipes and I love to cook but I never connect the two. Last weekend I set a goal to pick a (complicated) recipe and make it. Which I did and feel more confident I will do again!! This personal portfolio is another one goal I have set.
This personal portfolio I’m feeling solidly in the middle which means beyond started. Yay! I have developed and will soon publish content for my second story. I’ve been bugging enlisting my son to help create a logo. I have most all of my screenshots captured with sensitive information blurred or removed. Rocking and Rolling and it feels great. Here’s a happy tune to jam to as you finish your stuff.
